The latest episode of The Jim Henson Company Podcast explores the upcoming "Legends of the Dark Crystal" manga series. Take a listen as TokyoPop's Tim Beedle gives the inside scoop on these new comic book expansions of The Dark Crystal.
First, this blog is simply a fansite - it is not run or updated by Henson; it is not affiliated with the Jim Henson Company. This is not “their” blog.
Second, “Power of the Dark Crystal” is still in the works. The Henson Company is taking it slow to get things right – fans have waited 25 years for a sequel, what’s another 12-20 months? Brian Henson has been talking about Power of the Dark Crystal (as recent as last month) during his small tour of lectures on the topic of the future of digital puppetry and animatronics. This film is still very much in the works.
Keep in mind that the Jim Henson Company is a very small company -- they have less than 60 employees! They just don't have the resources to keep the hardcore fans updated every step of the way. Let’s face it, the hard core fans will probably be excited and go see the movie regardless of being walked though the whole production process years in advanced; and, from a marketing stand-point, there is no need to build up and rally the casual fans so far in advanced. Once the release is closer, I would expect information to flow out of Henson, but right now they have bigger priorities for their time and resources then updating a small faction of people who will support the film anyway. The whole publicity, marketing and PR department of Henson is two people – and with all the projects Henson has going on, they are going to focus on the current ones, not a film that is 2 years away. Some studios spoil their fans with blow-by-blow updates throughout pre-production and filming, but that is a very small percent and its only for big films from big studios – I wouldn’t expect to see/hear much until production is well underway and there is tangible news to report. Their really is just nothing new to share with the public (and until filming is ready to start their won't be). We’ve already gotten more information about this film than Henson fans got back in the ’80 regarding the production of the Dark Crystal (which took over 5 years to make).
Patience! Henson is working on the film – slow and steady. Just be patient.
So has there been even a peep out of the Henson company? We just want to know whats going on thats all. I looked at Brian Froud's website to no avail. And his myspace hasn't been updated in a looooooong time. Someone please spill their guts!
Yeah, I agree with the above post. Its been almost 13 months since any update. This movie along with Conan animated movie Red Nails are like the "holy grails" for film right now. Please don't set the record for major media project's longest development cycle like Chinese Democracy did with 12 years.
I'm not holding my breath. I personally think PotDC is dead in the water, and they just haven't called it yet. And as much as I enjoyed the original Dark Crystal, I'm actually OK with that. It would have been nice to revisit Thra, but it's my understanding that Jim didn't want a Dark Crystal sequel. He felt very strongly about that, in fact. (And in my opinion, bringing back the Skeksis is the wrong way to do a sequel anyway. Do something new instead of just rehashing the old.)
Hello from the future! Well this place is a nice tribute to the old production. I think an animated film would have been easier to do. At least we have the comics. And yes, I commented here because the other 2 entries have now been overun with spam. Lovely!
Can you please include a character like Lord Chamberland? UUUMMMMMM

ReplyDeleteMan, this is awesome. I hope this comes out soon!!! Looks like there might be a sequel to Labyrinth and a Fraggle Rock movie too??
ReplyDeleteWhy hasn't there been any news or images or production updates since November of last year?
ReplyDeleteWhat gives? Henson is running quite close to losing all fan interest in this film.
cmon people, throw us a frickin bone here
ReplyDeletealmost 1 year without news about that %$%& movie
ReplyDeleteThis site is complete horse manure! No updates in almost a year? What is Henson so afraid of? Where's the news?
ReplyDeleteHenson and Co are complete fucking horseshit. They refuse to speak to their fans, they let their blogs die off. This is laughable at the very best.
ReplyDeletePatience!
